December 2008 (Ceremony and Tour of MIHGH in April 2009) -

MIHGH check ceremony with the Foundation to Cure MelanomaThe Foundation to Cure Melanoma and the Lafayette Family Foundation (our sister foundation)donated $12,750 to the Maine Institute for Human Genetics and Health for melanoma research. This money will be used to create a “Maine Melanoma Bank” within the Biobank of Maine.

The check ceremony was preceded by a tour of the MIHGH facility in Bangor, Maine. The tour included the Proteomics lab, Genomics lab, and much more.

October 15, 2008 -

The Foundation to Cure Melanoma’s annual donor meeting was held on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at the Bluenose Inn, Bar Harbor, Maine.

This year’s program included a presentation by Dr. Fred Aronson of the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine in Portland, Maine. He spoke about the mechanics and importance of medical trial research. Dr. Aronson has recently published his research on treatment of advanced metastatic melanoma.

Speakers from the Maine Institute for Human Genetics and Health included: Dr. Paul Laub, a research scientist studying the elevated cancer incidence rates in Maine and New Hampshire; Christopher Farah the lead on information systems development of the Maine Human Tissue Repository; and Margaret Chavaree, the Tissue Repository Coordinator at MIHGH.
